Wimbledon from the beginning

The first Wimbledon Championships were held on August 9, 1877 at the All England Croquet and Tennis Club in in Wimbledon London. This tournament was open to all amateurs, women were not allowed to participate. The first tournament had 22 participants each player had to pay 1 shilling to enter.

Spencer Gore and William Marshall played in the finals. The match only lasted 50 minutes Spencer would claim the title with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. 



Lottie Dod, First Female Wimbledon singles Champion (Image without restriction)

Lottie Dod made history for many reasons, first being the first Wimbledon Ladies singles champion at the age of 15. She also won that title for five consecutive years. She is still the youngest female to ever win a Wimbledon championship.
